The public bid issued by the Port of Kaohsiung, TIPC to construct new bulk cargo wharf facilities in Anping Port’s Sikunshen District was won on January 16th by Hung Hua Construction Company, Ltd. with a bid of NT$639.54 million. Project work officially began on February 28th and is expected to finish by the end of 2019. When completed, Anping Port will have two new bulk cargo wharves and an additional 8ha of adjacent yard space. The Port of Kaohsiung noted that the renovation of the Port of Kaohsiung’s old port district had repurposed wharves in the Penglai Commercial District for water recreation. Thus, plans were put in motion to build wharves 17 and 18 at Sikunshen, Anping Port to assume a portion of the bulk cargo responsibilities once handled through Penglai Commercial District wharves 4~10 as well as to handle new cargo designated for Sikunshen’s new Logistics and Warehousing District. The project will install two new -11.0 deep, sheet-pile wharves extending for a total 429m in water length (199m for Wharf 18 and 230m for Wharf 17). The new wharves will be capable of handling bulk cargo vessels up to 35,000-ton class. In addition, the project will construct adjacent yard facilities and roadways. A separate bid was simultaneously announced for the dredging of adjacent waters to the required -11.0m depth. A Port of Kaohsiung spokesperson noted that completion of the Sikunshen bulk cargo wharf and facilities project will increase the number of deep-water berth facilities at Anping Port and attract larger ships to call there. In addition to receiving comprehensive services, commercial ships calling at Anping can reduce their transportation costs, increasing the attractiveness of setting up business at the port. Port growth is expected to raise the overall competitiveness of Anping Port, stimulate local economic growth, and advance regional prosperity.
