With the approach of summer, the Port of Hualien is set to launch the 2018 Hualien Harbor Summer Camp! To promote maritime education and increase awareness of port operations among students, the Port of Hualien is looking forward to once again offer an exciting series of fun, port-centered summer camp activities for kids and their parents. Different from last year’s classroom-heavy curriculum, this year’s summer camp is cooperating with the Fish Bar restaurant and the Hualien branch of TIPC Marine Corp. on new seafood education and tug boat activities. The fun-packed 2018 summer camp schedule engages all five senses and helps give students exceptional insight into how those who rely on the sea for their income and livelihood live. The 2018 Hualien Harbor Summer Camp was originally scheduled to be run only twice, beginning on June 30th and July 14th, respectively. The excitement generated by this year’s program meant that both camp sessions were fully booked within two weeks of their official announcement on the Port of Hualien’s Facebook page. Thus, in response to popular demand, the port announced that it would hold a third camp session starting on July 21st, with available spaces fully booked within one week. The port is currently considering the feasibility of opening a fourth camp session. Many of the participants in this year’s summer camp are parent-child teams, with parents eager to explore with their children the Port of Hualien’s unique charms. The Port of Hualien has made a special effort in recent years to promote maritime education. In addition to its regular Hualien Harbor Summer Camp, the port regularly accepts requests from teachers and students from elementary school through university to observe the port in operation in hopes of inspiring more young talent to consider pursuing a career in the commercial port sector and joining the TIPC family. Furthermore, the Port of Hualien is making firm and steady strides toward becoming a venue for environmental education as part of a growing national effort to promote awareness and appreciation among the Taiwan public of its maritime heritage and culture.
