The Port of Keelung, TIPC, as part of ongoing efforts to promote its further development as a homeport for international cruise ships and to improve berthing facilities, has invested NT$640 million to renovate the century-old infrastructure at West Wharf Nos. 2~4 as well as to dredge and deepen adjacent waters. The finished wharves will be able to accommodate vessels up to 554m in length and provide a maintained water depth of -11m. Furthermore, the wharves’ 150mt bollards, 200mt mooring bollards, and associated fenders will allow the port to welcome the world’s largest international cruise ships up to 225,000GT. Renovation work is nearing completion, after which the wharves will be ready for business. A statement by TIPC explained that, as vessel scheduling needs required that at least one of the wharves under renovation be available to handle vessels at all times, the Port of Keelung implemented renovation work on the wharves in two stages. Concurrent with 2017 renovation work, a total of 973 vessels and 387,520 passengers were serviced through West Wharf Nos. 2~4. Also, a Keelung City Government-sponsored industry expo was held on the site in October. The renovation project began on October 14th, 2015 and formally concluded 3 years and 3 months later on January 22nd of this year (2019). In addition to the already-mentioned facilities, the Port of Keelung is continuing to upgrade other port infrastructures. The renovated passenger service center behind West Wharf Nos. 2~3 will both handle passenger immigration and customs needs as well as provide space for cultural-creative businesses. This service center and the new integrated port building, also situated on the port’s west side, are set to become the hub of a new cruise passenger / tourism corridor in the city.
