With well over a century of history under its belt, the Port of Kaohsiung is applying leading-edge technology to see it smoothly into the new “smart port” era and to create a vision of the future that is infused with innovation, quality, and sustainability. In tandem with its internal rollout of smart-port technologies and infrastructures, the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) has joined with Studio A to promote the “AI Dream Railway”, an interactive game that uses engaging mBot robots to teach children how to write and use computer code and satisfy their interest in smart technologies. TIPC plans to take the AI Dream Railway on the road to rural / remote schools across the city in order to ensure that all children have the chance to learn about and be inspired by technology and the inherent potential of smart technologies to build a better life. Our youngest citizens will definitively impact Taiwan’s future prospects as a developer and user of advanced smart technologies. Although information technology (IT) is a subject that has been incorporated into the national 12-year basic education curriculum, children in schools outside of the country’s urban centers have fewer IT resources and opportunities to use IT in their daily lives. Therefore, the Port of Kaohsiung has partnered with Studio A to bring the latter’s AI Dream Railway to three elementary schools (Daxian, Zhongzhou, and Qijin) near the port in November and December as part of “AI Tech-Ed Camp”. The curriculum will introduce state-of-the-art technologies and apply the easy-to-use Swift Playgrounds programming-learning app to teach basic programming logic and design. By the end, participants will be able to use the programs that they have written to guide mBot robots through a series of challenges. In addition to programming, the curriculum teaches basic programming concepts, logic and computational thinking, teamwork, and communication skills. Can you write calligraphy without pen and ink? AI Dream Railway teaches students how to create beautiful pieces of calligraphic art using the latest Apple Pencil and, in the process, builds students’ aesthetic sensibilities and creativity. Smart technologies won’t turn all users into computer experts. Nonetheless, giving students the chance to experience and learn about these latest technologies is an important part of giving youth the building blocks of a better future and unlimited opportunities for growth and betterment. TIPC hopes that the seeds of smart tech take root and grow in the heart of every student. After wrapping up the AI Tech-Ed Camp at Qijin Elementary School this year, TIPC will take the program on the road, with planned stops at all of Kaohsiung City’s rural / remote elementary schools. Giving kids hands-on experience in robotics and programming encourages them to challenge their personal limits, build academic confidence, and become self-confident, proactive pioneers in ushering Kaohsiung into a new era of smart tech innovation. Building on a century of history and heritage, the Port of Kaohsiung looks forward to continuing to meet its social obligations in terms of promoting sustainable, world-class port operations and building a better society.
