As part of efforts to continue upgrading port operations and improving the quality and efficiency of core port services, Port of Taichung has since 2023 invested in necessary software and hardware upgrades and installed an automated container drop-off / pickup control station smart-integrated with port gantry cranes. These newly installed facilities read and process container numbers and other critical information automatically to improve handling accuracy and reduce human error. Since the opening of Port of Taichung’s automated lanes, real-time data exchange and system automation has effectively reduced container drop-off / pickup times by some 30%, cut driver wait times by as much as 50%, and increased recognition rates by about 90%. Related container freight station (CFS) investments include the installation and integration of advanced smart-tech enabling operation and monitoring activities to be handled remotely via digital management and IoT-enabled platforms. Moreover, the optical sensors and digital image processing technologies integrated into port gantry cranes permit the fast and accurate reading and automated processing of container and vehicle-license numbers, facilitating expedited customs clearance and cargo loading / off-loading operations, reducing staff workloads, and improving jobsite safety. Committed to corporate social responsibility, Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), beyond implementing and promoting ESG policies and principles in its own business, is actively encouraging businesses operating at its ports to work together to achieve environmental sustainability goals. Data streams generated by the abovementioned CFS smart automation system at Port of Taichung are actively shared with and processed on TIPC’s centralized container drop-off / pickup scheduling platform, resulting in significantly faster container drop-off / pickup times and thus lower idling-related truck emissions. Furthermore, the ability of the smart gantry crane system at Port of Taichung to quickly and accurately read and process container numbers and information effectively eliminates human error while raising port service quality and efficiency. Building on steady success in this area, TIPC will continue forward toward achieving its environmental protection, sustainability, and smart-port efficiency goals.
