As part of its ongoing promotion of maritime education and in response to the strongly positive public response to its 2017 and 2018 summer camps, the Port of Hualien is holding the ‘2019 Hualien Harbor Summer Camp’ program every Saturday during July and once during August. Together with partner agencies, including the Maritime and Port Bureau, TIPC Marine, and Hualien Harbor Police Department, port administrators are again providing a fun-filled schedule of activities for kids and their parents to discover the unique charms of Hualien Port. This year’s full schedule includes a guided tour of the port (including normally off-limits facilities such as the harbor signal tower and port monitoring center), a Harbor Police experience course, a visit to Taiwan’s only five-sided lighthouse (Qilaibi), and a water tour of the Port of Hualien aboard a pilot boat. These activities are designed to give participants a greater understanding and appreciation of the port and its work. The five Saturday dates scheduled for the 2019 Hualien Harbor Summer Camp include July 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th and August 10th. Although the first two have already finished, the remaining three still have spaces available for kids and their parents. Please register soon to make sure you don’t miss out on this year’s summer camp! In addition to its annual summer camp program, the Port of Hualien has been actively promoting its role as a permanent center of maritime education. A request is pending with the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) to install permanent environmental-education facilities at the port. Furthermore, port staff earned environmental education trainer certification from the EPA in 2018. The Port of Hualien has its sights set on becoming a national platform for public maritime education and understanding.
