Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) subsidiary Port of Keelung allocated NT$190 million in funding to construct a new wastewater treatment facility on reclaimed land in Taipei Port's South Wharf District. Work on this project, designed to help attract new investment to the district and meet the wastewater treatment needs of businesses operating at the port, commenced on October 3rd, 2019 and finished up two years later on December 8th, 2021. Taipei Port's South Wharf District embraces 146ha of recently reclaimed land built up from soil and rock excavated from the port's navigation channels and during expansion work on Linkou Power Plant nearby. TIPC remains in the process of installing critical support and public utility infrastructures across the district to attract new business operations. Green wind energy and smart-car industry zones have already been designated within the district. The abovementioned wastewater treatment facility is designed to efficiently process up to 1,500 m³/day of industrial, domestic, and vessel-sourced wastewater, which, after three stages of clarification is released into the environment. The facility meets both critical industry and environmental-sustainability requirements. In line with the needs of national development and global shipping logistics, Taipei Port's South Wharf District operates as a free trade zone (FTZ). Current objectives for the district include meeting northern Taiwan's containerized and bulk freight cargo needs. On the near-term horizon, a container transshipment center will be developed to further expand port service capabilities, while, in the longer term, the district will further diversify capabilities to take advantage of international logistics opportunities and increase overall competitiveness.
