The business performance of TIPC subsidiary Port of Keelung was impressive in 2022, with handled container volume for the year expected to again top 1.6 million TEU. This is 10% above the number achieved in 2020. Port of Keelung recognizes the strong and supportive role of shipping firm partners and port businesses in maintaining annual container handling volumes at this level. Also in 2022, Port of Keelung continued to push forward with projects to relocate the port's naval wharves, retool onshore facilities, and upgrade western container yards. In addition, work was completed on the front warehouse at West Wharf No. 16 and passenger service and parking lot facilities adjacent to East Warf Nos. 3-4 at Port of Keelung and a heavy cargo wharf (for handling wind turbine components) at Taipei Port. Also, public bids have been completed on 3.6ha of available land behind South Warf District Wharf No. S6-1 at Taipei Port and in Suao Port's logistics & warehousing district. These and other efforts continue to increase the competitiveness of these ports. In terms of asset optimization, Port of Keelung expects to finish work in February 2023 on two public lease projects in Keelung City's Nuannuan District (land lease and parking facility lease). Also, after the end of the request for information (RFI) period in January, the port will issue an invitation for bid in February on commercial property and land along Xin 2nd Road in Keelung City's Xinyi District. Further, the port will retain a consulting firm to identify and recruit an appropriate developer for Dexin Village, a port property located near Qidu Train Station in Keelung City's Qidu District, to maximize the value of this asset for both the port and city. Looking forward, prospects for Port of Keelung remain positive given continued support from shipping firms and port businesses. Handled port volume in 2023 is expected to increase slightly to 1.62 million TEU. Abolishment of the pandemic ban on international cruise ships on October 24th, 2022 and the gradual phase-out of domestic pandemic-related restrictions are already fueling enthusiasm in the international cruise vacation market. Port officials are keeping close tabs on shipping and cruise ship voyage planning. In addition to offering the highest-ever discounts on port fees, port officials, led by Port of Keelung President Kao, recently paid a visit to Europe's largest cruise ship port Barcelona. The port is also sharpening plans for attracting more cruise ship calls and aggressively pursuing opportunities for lateral communications and cooperation with other key ports across Pacific Asia in hopes of quickly reviving Taiwan's cruise and ferry passenger volumes.
