To support leasing and related support efforts on newly reclaimed land in Taipei Port’s South Warf District, Port of Keelung, TIPC invested NT$557 million to construct three new landmark public buildings in the district’s public service area. A ceremony marking the completion of related work was held on May 18th, hosted by Port of Keelung President Chuan-kai Kao and attended by representatives of MOPB’s North Taiwan Maritime Affairs Center, the Keelung Harbor Police Department, design consulting supervisor CYL Engineering Consulting, and Wang Pao Construction, Inc. Taipei Port’s 146ha South Wharf District was built up from sand and silt dredged from the port’s navigation channels and during the expansion of nearby Linkou Power Plant. In step with preparing lots in this district for bid, Port of Keelung officials pushed ahead with constructing public facilities to meet the future needs of firms operating in the district. The three buildings, including a general administrative center, harbor police office, and fire station, are all four story, RC-concrete structures. Construction work commenced on October 30th, 2020 and wrapped up two-and-a-half years later on April 20th, 2023. These buildings and their service infrastructures will greatly benefit development and operations in the South Wharf District. In addition to their use by future leaseholders, the buildings will facilitate the provision of public services, promote overall port growth, and enhance investment interest. In line with national development priorities and global shipping trends, South Wharf District will operate as a TIPC Free Trade Zone (FTZ) with a primary focus on servicing the container and bulk-cargo handling needs of northern Taiwan. In time, the district will take on more container transshipment terminal functionality and, over the longer term may diversify into international logistics and other services to maximize port competitiveness.
