Port of Taichung, TIPC is committed to capturing and properly disposing of the dust and debris generated regularly by cargo handling operations at the port. Port officials hold rolling review meetings regularly with port-based cargo handling firms to promote upgrades and improvements to equipment and procedures. In light of recent advances in soda-ash handling equipment, TIPC successfully assisted firms to purchase two new dust-collection hopper / dust-minimizing clamshell hydraulic grab units in 2020, which have effectively cut particulate pollution by 80% while boosting handling efficiency by 60%, clearly demonstrating the superiority of these units over earlier systems. This has encouraged other firms to step up and purchase another two units this year (2023), which will help further improve environmental quality in and around Port of Taichung. In the interest of operating as a good ‘corporate citizen’ and complying with increasingly strict environmental regulations, Port of Taichung, beyond centralizing the handling of particulate-generating bulk materials such as coal, sand, gravel, and copper concentrates, has since 2017 jointly promoted the installation of low-dust handling facilities at the port in cooperation with MPB’s Central Taiwan Maritime Affairs Center and Taichung City’s Environmental Protection Bureau. In pursuit of related goals, multiple rolling review meetings have been held, with three meetings / site inspections this year alone. The resulting strategy and action plan reflect input and support from a diverse range of experts. Going above and beyond national regulations, port officials have set relevant pre-processing, in-process, and post-processing rules and requirements. These delineate and standardize related preparatory procedures and environmental remediation requirements, require firms to fill out pre- and post-work checklists, and mandate enhanced particulate-suppression and dust-wetting protocols, all with the goals of preventing the release of airborne particulates during cargo handling operations and achieving environmentally sustainable operations.
