Port of Hualien, TIPC is on track to completing work on the new Qilaibi Coastal Scenic Corridor in time for its grand opening in 2024. Linking the port with nearby destinations along the Pacific Coast, the corridor project is designed to significantly improve traffic flows and service infrastructures to facilitate continued tourism growth in the area and create an attractive new multi-functional tourism and recreation zone. The 12m-wide corridor, bordered by Gangbin Road on the south and Port of Hualien on the north, runs for 860 meters in length. The project is being built on a budget of NT$83 million and, once finished, will be traversed by a scenic oceanfront bicycle pathway with exceptional views of the natural coastline. Important eco-friendly and green elements have been incorporated into the project. Parallel rows of salt-resistant, native date palms and mastwood trees have been planted along both sides of the road to provide shade and a natural, green windbreak. Also, multiple eco-corridors traverse the ground underneath the road to provide safe passage to the area’s land crabs, and educational signs introducing these crabs and their habitat are posted at several points along the corridor. Furthermore, public path and roadway light fixtures have been designed to fit in naturally with the scenery and to minimize the impact of light pollution on the ecosystem and wildlife. Once completed, the Qilaibi Coastal Scenic Corridor will take its place at the center of the area’s unique coastal resources district, and link Port of Hualien to Qilaibi Lighthouse, Four-Eight Highland, and Qixingtan to the north and Marine Resources Hall, Whale-Watching Marina, and Hualien Fishing Harbor to the south. The corridor is expected to fuel further private-sector investment interest in the area and be an engine for tourism industry growth in and around Hualien Port.
