To enhance ship inspection efficiency and strengthen maritime safety, the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) has developed the Smart Ship Inspection System, which will officially launch on November 1. Introducing a convenient, standardized, and intelligent inspection model, the system incorporates advanced artificial intelligence (AI) image recognition and big data analytics, along with a “one-tap application” feature for the public to streamline their application process through smartphones. Future system upgrades will further refine AI image recognition and data-driven inspection algorithms, marking a major milestone in AI-enabled ship inspections.
Director-General Hsieh-lung Yeh highlighted that Taiwan-flagged vessels undergo an average of approximately 10,000 inspections annually, and the Smart Ship Inspection System is essential to manage the various highly specialized inspection items. By leveraging AI-based image recognition and automated visual comparison technology, the system can accurately detect differences in hull conditions, considerably reducing the risk of human error, shortening manual inspection time, and improving both accuracy and operational efficiency.
The MPB further explained that the new system incorporates big data analytics and applies a Bayesian probability model to conduct risk assessments. By taking vessel type, age, tonnage, and operating waters into account, the model predicts high-risk deficiencies and potential hazards, enabling inspectors to focus on priority items for vessels with elevated risk profiles.
To offer more convenient services and allow users to track their inspection applications in real time, the system also provides personalized functions for vessel owners. Applicants no longer need to visit service counters to complete inspection applications. After accessing the system on a mobile device (https://svmapp.motcmpb.gov.tw/) and completing identity verification, they can use the one-tap application function, which submits the request and updates progress automatically without any manual data entry. The system delivers a more streamlined and user-oriented online application experience.
