To ensure smooth maritime transport and reinforce navigation-safety management during the Qingming holidays, the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) conducted a joint inspection of public safety and operational services for passenger vessels and maritime passenger terminals from March 24 to 26, 2025, examining key items on 51 fixed-route passenger vessels and 5 maritime passenger terminals. The inspection aimed to safeguard passenger safety and enhance the overall quality of maritime services.
The MPB emphasizes that the spot checks focused on the following areas: for passenger vessels, the proper broadcasting or demonstration of life jacket usage before departure; the correct installation and effectiveness of life jackets, life rings, self-igniting lights, floating smoke signals, and lifelines in accordance with regulations; the functionality of fire alarm systems; and the normal operation of main engines and exhaust systems. For maritime passenger terminals, the inspections concentrated on the clarity of timetable and ticket price displays, including bilingual (Chinese and English) labeling; the installation and use of accessible boarding facilities; the clarity and visibility of accessibility signage; the unobstructed condition of accessible restrooms and passageways; the functionality of accessible restroom facilities; and the adequacy of public safety measures such as firefighting and disaster prevention equipment, along with their operational service quality. If any deficiencies affecting maritime safety were identified, operators were required to implement immediate corrective measures and could only resume operations after passing a reinspection.
The MPB reminds operators that during the holiday period, whenever adverse weather or other force-majeure factors affect vessel operations, they must post notices at business offices, waiting rooms, and other relevant locations, and issue announcements through online platforms, radio broadcasts, and other media. The MPB will also provide real-time updates on sailing status through its official website (https://www.motcmpb.gov.tw/; click on the Qingming Holiday Maritime Transport Information section to access service notices and sailing-status information). Passengers are therefore advised to review weather forecasts and confirm the latest sailing schedules before traveling during the holidays, enabling them to arrange or adjust their itineraries in advance.
