Beacon of Light Shining Through Nine Decades in the Far East: The 90th Anniversary of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse

Sandiaojiao Lighthouse, the easternmost beacon on the island of Taiwan, will commemorate the 90th anniversary of its lighting on May 1. To celebrate, the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) hosted a commemorative event this evening (April 30) at the lighthouse. Attendees included Deputy Mayor Ti-chih Chu of New Taipei City; Director Li-yu You of the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Headquarters, Tourism Administration, MOTC; Director Hsiu-lan Shih of the Sandiaojiao Radar Station, Air Navigation and Weather Services, CAA, MOTC; Gongliao District Chief Chien-hui Ke; and Fulian Village Chief Wen-i Wu. With  the guests offering their congratulations, we welcome the 90th anniversary of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse as its beacon is lit at sunset.

Director General Hsieh-lung Yeh of the MPB stated that the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse, located at the easternmost point of the Island of Taiwan, is one of the nation’s most iconic lighthouses. The lighthouse has long served as a vital guide for maritime vessels, safeguarding navigation in Taiwan’s northeastern coastal waters. Over time, its role has evolved from a purely functional maritime marker to a well-known tourist attraction. The 90th anniversary celebration was organized with the hope of linking the lighthouse with the Northeast Coast Tourism Corridor, jointly promoted by the New Taipei City Government and the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Headquarters of the Tourism Administration. This initiative aims to stimulate regional tourism industry and enable more people to appreciate the unique charm of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse.

The event commenced with a lawn concert featuring a string orchestra from Aodi Elementary School in Gongliao District, New Taipei City. The music rich in local cultural characteristics, highlighting the close connection between the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse and nearby fishing villages. This was followed by the screening of a promotional video introducing the history of the lighthouse and its recent achievements in tourism development. The birthday ceremony concluded at sunset, coinciding with the lighthouse’s beacon lighting and music..

Further anniversay events are also being organized by the MPB. These include a one-month postcard stamping event with gift redemption, a two-month quiz-based prize draw, three guided walking tours, and two additional lawn concerts. In celebration of the occasion, a special 90th anniversary commemorative stamp for the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse will be released, along with a themed stamp collection activity titled “Lighthouse Exploration Journey.” These events will offer visitors to the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse a rich and rewarding experience.
